Principal Digital Designer
We’re looking for an accomplished designer to lead the creative delivery of e-commerce experiences that captivate and convert.
Note: this role might also be known as “UX/UI Designer” or “Web Designer”.
JH is an e-commerce agency dedicated to helping growth-orientated brands make their next strategic breakthrough. We specialise in building, maintaining, and enhancing online stores enjoyed by millions worldwide. We work with notable clients across various markets and sectors, like Big Bus Tours, Graham and Green, and Bargain Max. Our clients share a common trait: the drive to innovate or lead their markets. We support their goals through strategic consulting, design, development, support, and ongoing optimisation.
You’ll take ownership of the design function within JH, setting the bar for everything we do in the field. You’ll utilise in-depth knowledge of e-commerce and a broad creative skill set to shape design solutions that advance our client’s goals. You’ll also augment our new business efforts by providing expert thought leadership to highlight our strategic value to clients. Add to this, leading our internal design projects where you’ll have free-reign on things like Meet Magento UK and others.
You’ll be involved throughout the project lifecycle, actively consulting and collaborating with stakeholders so that your design solutions are commercially aware and technically feasible.
Propose ideas for client roadmaps that support their strategic business goals
Conduct discovery activities such as workshops, design reviews, and user research
Help to scope, quote, and plan the design work for new projects
You’ll employ mature skills and experience to craft e-commerce solutions that are visually appealing, intuitive to use, and effective at meeting project objectives.
Design and document high-quality UX and UI deliverables (we mostly use Miro and Figma)
Present your work to colleagues and clients to gather feedback and build consensus
Conduct QA alongside developers to ensure the target experience is achieved
You’ll be a standard bearer for the value of design, continually learning, innovating, and educating to maximise the reach and impact of our creative services.
Champion the principles and impact of user-centred design
Support marketing and sales activities that attract new clients
Level up design practice and contribute to wider business initiatives
This role requires someone who can fulfil the responsibilities listed above by possessing the majority of the capabilities outlined below. But we don’t expect you to match everything — it’s just as important that you have a passion for self-development to grow into the role.
You should be comfortable owning projects that range from quick iterative CRO tweaks to wholesale multi-week redesigns, with your process and tools adapting accordingly.
Significant employment in a similar mid/senior design role at an agency
Portfolio of successful design projects including e-commerce websites
Able to independently capture project briefs and define design process
Skilled in producing both UX and UI deliverables to a high quality
Experience of planning and conducting audits, research, and experiments
Knowledge of usability and conversion optimisation tactics
Familiarity with accessibility guidelines and techniques
You should be confident at collaborating with others in a variety of settings, absorbing diverse inputs and articulating your own ideas with clarity and engagement.
Experience leading design conversations with a range of stakeholders
Skilled in exchanging constructive feedback and nurturing buy-in
Familiarity with planning and facilitating creative workshop exercises
Interested in writing or speaking publicly about your expertise
Like the rest of the business, this role will work remotely most of the time. You should be equipped to thrive in this kind of work environment, even if it’s your first remote position.
High levels of self-motivation, initiative, and resilience
Familiarity with remote tech (e.g. Slack, Zoom, Loom) and asynchronous communication
Properly equipped office space where you can be productive
Able to travel for face-to-face team and client meetings
We offer a range of benefits such as:
Remote working
Flexible hours (with time banking)
31 days annual leave (inclusive of Bank Holidays)
Funds for professional development and home office setup
Quarterly personal development plans
Top of the range hardware and software
Remote socials and in-person events (twice a year)
